DRONERO TO DRONERO - Province of Cuneo

Itinerary

  • DAY 1 – Arrival and overnight in Dronero – Hotel ***

Along the itinerary:
- We suggest the visit of Dronero, an ancient town featuring a notable Medieval “devil’s” bridge, and then proceed upwards to find some little jewels such as the churches of San Salvatore in Macra, San Sebastiano in Celle Macra and San Peyre in Stroppo.

- We suggest a detour to Villar San Costanzo where the land erosion process, which began 15,000 years ago, created curious mushroom-shaped geological phenomena,  known as “Ciciu”, which extend over a vast area, today part of a Natural reserve. Also the nearby Villar Abbey, with frescoes dating back to the XV century as well as a XI century vault, it’s worth a visit.

  • DAY 2 – 1st STAGE (DRONERO – VALLORIATE)

Along the itinerary:
- Among the places to visit, we recommend Demonte, with its picturesque old town centre and Vinadio, with its imposing Albertine Fort, one of the most interesting military building in the Alps.

- Caraglio – Spinning-mill - Edified round to 3 courts, the Filatoio of Caraglio is the most ancient silk factory in Europe. It represents the only case inside the economic context of seventeenth-century Piedmont for its importance about architecture.

- Borgo S. Dalmazzo is worth a visit for the imposing Benedectine Abbey of San Dalmazzo (11th century), a landmark for the pilgrims walking between Northern Italy and Provence.

- Valloriate – Chestnut museum - This Museum is devoted to the chestnut tree.

  • DAY 3 – 2nd STAGE (VALLORIATE – COSTIGLIOLE SALUZZO)

- The Grana Valley is considered an enclave of the “provençal “ language; in fact the Provençal Coumbourscuro Centre is located in the side valley of Sancto Lucio, and its aim is to protect and promote the provençal language, as well as its folklore and musical traditions. There is also an interesting Ethnographic museum. 

- Busca – Castello del Roccolo, Chiesa di San Martino, Eremo di Belmonte

  • DAY 4 – 3rd STAGE (COSTIGLIOLE SALUZZO- PAESANA)

Piasco – Museum of the harp

- The museum of the harp Victor Salvi is the first and only one dedicated entirely to the harp, its history and its sounds.

Ostana – Civic eco-museum 
- The civic museum is situated in the old Palazzo Comunale and presents, with a reconstruction of some environments, moments of the life in Ostana in the past. The history is told through historical documents, for instance the Ostana statute of 1425.

  • DAY 5 – 4th STAGE (PAESANA - SALUZZO)

Along the itinerary:
 - Visit of Saluzzo, a town with a typical Medieval plan. You can admire its low houses and narrow streets leading up to the Castle, definitely one of the most fascinating towns of Piedmont with its elegant stately buildings such as Casa Cavassa and the wonderful church of St. Giovanni containing fine works of art..

Visit of the Manta castle, linked to the history of the Marquises of Saluzzo, who ruled the local area for over 400 years. The castle is a splendid example of a 14th century fort, which keeps in the baronial hall one of the most important late Gothic European documents.

Staffarda: chance to visit the Abbey complex of Staffarda, an impressive group of buildings constructed by Cistercensian monks in the 12th-13th century. 

  • DAY 6 – 5th STAGE (SALUZZO- MONDOVI')

Along the itinerary: 
Visit of Mondovì, a city divided in two parts, the higher part, the most antique and the lower part, lively and recently constructed. Mondovì Piazza, the higher part of the city, is an ancient medieval quarter, profoundly marked by the work of the architect Gallo.

Possibility to reach Mondovì Piazza by the funicular railway. Particularly pleasing are the “Belvedere”, a garden from where you can enjoy a splendid panorama, characterized by the presence of the Tower of the Bressano and the Ceramic Museum.

On Saturday morning, the city market will take place in the centre of the city.

  • DAY 7 – 6th STAGE - (MONDOVI’ – PEVERAGNO)

Along the itinerary: Pursuing these lands you come to Vicoforte, where the Sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna “Regina Montis Regalis” rises. It is a very important monument for the exceptional dimensions of its dome, one of the biggest in the world with an elliptical base.

Possibility of different activities and laboratories on the territory:

Visit of a local farm or B&B and possibility to do traditional activities, such as strawberry harvest and jam production; cheese tastings; music laboratory in the woods, yoga classes, archery or horse

riding.

The Bossea Cave (Frabosa Soprana) is in the Corsaglia Valley, near the village of Frabosa Soprana. Situated at 836 meters above sea level, it is one of the most beautiful and important caves in Italy. It is a protected area run by the Natural Park of the Marguareis Massif. Its calcareous concretions, consisting of stalactites and stalagmites, are often impressive for their size no less than for their beautiful shapes and colours. - www.grottadibossea.com

From an architectural point of view one can find a wonderful Middle-Age monastery (Certosa di Pesio) in the inner of the park in the Natural Marguareis Park.

  • DAY 8 – 7th STAGE (PEVERAGNO - DRONERO)

Along the itinerary
The Natural Park of the Gesso and Stura rivers is an area of 4500 hectares for sport, didactics, free-time, culture. A connection for the surrounding territories, near the valley and
the mountains where it meets the Natural Park of Maritime Alps. A green web of cycle-hiking routes, currently about 100 km extension to connect all the park-areas. Some tracks give the chance to fully enjoy the nature and the landscape of the park on foot or by bike. Signs, information boards and reading stations guide the visitors to discover the territories in their natural and cultural traits.

Visit of Cuneo: Still today “frontier” town, lively and active in business and hospitality, it allows visitors to discover traditional stores under the arcades, elegant shops and inviting coffee and pastry shops. Between historical and artistic evidences, we can found the Gothic Church of St. Francesco, the adjoining monastery and the civic museum (divided into three sections: archaeological, artistic and ethnographic), the baroque churches of St. Ambrogio, S.ta Maria, the ancient church of S.ta Maria del Bosco, from 1817 it became a cathedral, the patrician houses, the XVII-XVIII century Town Hall and the Municipal Tower of the XIV century.
